The Elewijt villager, Hendrik Van Ham, is employed as a courier at the Steen when Rubens spends his last years there. With this fictional story grafted onto historical facts, he wants to give us access to the castle in the mid-17th century. In his memoir, the courier reports on his experiences, what he sees and feels, and discusses and interprets paintings by his master.
